Midsummer Mayhem - Fusion Bellydance Intensive

- July 5th, 2008 in Providence, RI
-
4 hours of workshops with Tempest & Aradia

Workshop Descriptions (2 hours each):
ARADIA PRESENTS: CORE: Concepts and Tools for Fusion Dance -
Have you asked yourself any of the following questions?
I want to do something different with my dance, but I'm not sure what.
My base is in Egyptian Cabaret, but I really want to try/get into Fusion.
How can I translate what I already know into a more modern/alternative/fusion dance?
How do I make a Fusion Performance idea look as good in person as it does in my head?
I want to learn to BellyDance, but I also know what I don't want to look like.
I want to perform a Fusion piece, but keep getting stuck.

In this workshop, we will touch on several useful tools which will:
* Strengthen our private practice
* Provide a fresh perspective on choreography and combinations
* Plant seeds for the execution of effortless improvisation
* Promote the evolution of our base technique into personalized elements of fusion.

Prior dance experience will be very helpful in this workshop, but is not required. Standard movements, present in all forms of BellyDance will be used in their original forms, and then layered, warped, twisted, drilled and personalized. We will move from our comfort level, using different theories of movement and non-traditional music.

The following musical selections will be played during the workshop, and are available for download on iTunes and other mp3 websites. Daft Punk "Technologic" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" , Amon Tobin "Untitled (with Kid Koala)" "El Wraith" and "Proper Hoodidge" , Etta James "At Last" , US3 "Cantaloop - Flip Fantasia" , Corvus Corax "Fili Neidhardi" , The Chemical Brothers "Do It Again" , Indian Ropeman "66 Meters (radio edit)" , Shroud "Black" , Man Man "Spider Cider" and/or "Engrish Bwudd"

TEMPEST PRESENTS:

"Strange Presence" - A truly successful performance does more than show how well you can do the moves-it should really speak to your audience and exude expression. You CAN learn how to have a stronger personality on stage and channel that energy for a more dynamic performance. Discover the key aspects of capturing your audience with your stage presence and develop your own onstage drama! We'll particularly focus on improvisational technique, character development, and learning to be more "in the moment" while overcoming stage fright and breaking blah performance patterns. This class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it. Open to all levels and suitable for all genres.

DATE & TIME:

Saturday, July 5th, 2008, 10am-2:30pm

About Tempest

Tempest is an artist, designer, dancer, and writer recently relocated from Bay Area of California to the Jersey Shore. Although she enjoys studying what tradition has to offer, Tempest loves exploring the dance through unusual music and creative costuming, pulling on her visual arts background to "paint a picture" with the dance; engaging the audience through dramatic embodied storytelling, passionate expression, and sensuous, mesmerizing movement.

She finds inspiration for her dances in many eras, places, and faces, from ancient cultures and spiritual myths worldwide, to the work of silent film star and original vamp Theda Bara, and turn-of-the-century dance goddess Ruth St. Denis. She is most well-known for her Gothic Belly Dance performances and instruction, and is featured on the first ever GBD performance DVD produced by WorldDanceNewYork entitled "The Darker Side of Fusion", it's sequel "Gothic Belly Dance: Revelations", and Hollywood Music Center's "Bellydance Underworld". She also has an instructional DVD geared towards the alternatively-minded entitled "Bellydance for Beautiful Freaks" produced by WorldDanceNewYork.
