Gothic Belly Dance @ The Jersey Shore Workshop Intensive & Hipnotique!

- March 22nd 2008 in North Cape May, NJ
& Cape May, NJ
4 hours of workshops with Tempest
& Hipnotique: An Evening of Bellydance

Workshop Descriptions:

12pm-2pm: Dramatic Body Language
At the heart of Gothic Belly Dance is the ability to express deep emotions through the dance in a dramatic style. While in theory, this makes sense, understanding how to make this happen physically is another matter. How does one go about transferring matters of the heart, mind, and spirit into a corporeal expression? In this workshop, we learn to take regular belly dance movements and add Gothic accents to them, focusing on expressing emotion, intent, and power through our steps and presence. From facial expression to fingertips, we'll be dissecting the accents that give Gothic Belly Dance extra substance, drama, and excitement. You'll take home movement embellishments and flourishes to incorporate into your own style. This class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it.

2:30pm-4:30pm - Drop Dead Dramatic!
This workshop is the next level past “Dramatic Body Language”, with all new gothic combinations focusing on level changes, floorwork, turns and spins while combining concept execution successfully with movement. Students will build further upon their gothic movement foundation, while adding more style, personality, and depth to their own vocabulary. This class is ideal for the more intermediate/advanced dancer truly looking to capture that theatrical edge and dramatic feel to their performance while technically taking their skills to a new level as we focus on strong form, hints and how-to's for jaw-dropping floorwork and clean breathtaking spins and turns. Students may wish to bring knee pads or a yoga mat for the floorwork section of this workshop.

Make a weekend of it!

March is a great time at the Jersey Shore, and fantastic deals can be had at the local Victorian B&B's in Cape May and surrounding hotels/motels. The workshop location is minutes away from beautiful historic Cape May (shops open all year!), and just south of the Wildwoods, Stone Harbor, and Avalon. About 40 minutes south of Atlantic City and Hamilton. The weather can be quite nice (or wet, or both). But there's plenty to do and see regardless.

*No refunds unless event is cancelled. Tuition can be transferred to someone else, just be sure to let us know!

About Tempest, Your Instructor

Tempest is an artist, designer, dancer, and writer recently relocated from Bay Area of California to the Jersey Shore. Although she enjoys studying what tradition has to offer, Tempest loves exploring the dance through unusual music and creative costuming, pulling on her visual arts background to "paint a picture" with the dance; engaging the audience through dramatic embodied storytelling, passionate expression, and sensuous, mesmerizing movement.

She finds inspiration for her dances in many eras, places, and faces, from ancient cultures and spiritual myths worldwide, to the work of silent film star and original vamp Theda Bara, and turn-of-the-century dance goddess Ruth St. Denis. She is most well-known for her Gothic Belly Dance performances and instruction, and is featured on the first ever GBD performance DVD produced by WorldDanceNewYork entitled "The Darker Side of Fusion", it's sequel "Gothic Belly Dance: Revelations", and Hollywood Music Center's "Bellydance Underworld". She also has an instructional DVD geared towards the alternatively-minded entitled "Bellydance for Beautiful Freaks" produced by WorldDanceNewYork.
